Meet our girls

Oops! This one isn't a girl :) We got some chicks this spring and they were all supposed to be pullets, but out of the 12 there were 2 that started crowing when they got older. The first one who started crowing has gone on to be chicken salad. This one is not as mean as the first one yet, so he is getting to stay around a little longer.

Here they are not long after we brought them home in March. We ended up putting them in the house (so it is sometimes used as a barn). It was so cold out that I was afraid they wouldn't stay warm enough in an outside shed. Our grandson, Joseph was fascinated with them.

It finally warmed up enough to move them outside, which was good, because they had outgrown the tub we had them in. Here they are around 6 weeks old. It always amazes me how fast they grow.

Here they are almost 5 months old and are ready to start laying eggs. That is always an exciting time for me!

This is a Barred Rock hen trying out the new nests that Tommy made yesterday. We have this new group in a different house than our old hens and there weren't any nests for them. I was so glad she knew just what they were for and went right to work.

And here are some of their first eggs. The first ones are always so little and cute. They will get bigger as the hens get older. I have been so spoiled by having fresh eggs. Eggs from the store are no comparison to ones you gather yourself. We like to refer to store bought eggs as embalmed :)

Hope you have enjoyed looking at our poultry enterprise. They bring me a lot of enjoyment and the bonus of something good to eat.
